They are designed to make the viewer feel a sudden burst of excitement or a flash of panic. When a child feels rushed, they are far less likely to question whether a video or message is genuine.

You might see this when a primary school student is playing their favourite video game and a pop-up appears promising unlimited free in-game currency. The message might feature a countdown timer or claim that the offer will disappear in sixty seconds. Alternatively, they might receive a direct message warning them that their account will be deleted if they do not click a link immediately. Both scenarios use emotional manipulation to bypass logical thinking and force a quick reaction.

We can help children recognise this feeling by talking about it before it happens. You can simply ask them how certain videos or adverts make them feel in their tummy. If something makes them feel like they must act right this second, that is their cue to stop. Teach them to physically take their hands off the keyboard or put the tablet down on the table. We need to introduce them to the idea that reliable information always exists in more than one place.

Imagine a child sees a video on social media claiming that their favourite theme park is giving away free tickets for the weekend, or perhaps they see a news clip suggesting that schools are being cancelled for a month. Instead of accepting the video at face value, we can teach them to open a new tab on their browser. If a major celebrity is truly giving away thousands of pounds, or if schools are genuinely closing, that news will be reported on trusted sites like BBC Newsround or the official website of the company involved.

You can explain this to a primary school student by comparing it to hearing a rumour in the playground. If one person tells them a wild story, they would probably want to check with a teacher or another friend to see if it actually happened. The internet works in exactly the same way. Encouraging them to search for the story independently builds a habit of cross-referencing that will serve them well throughout their entire digital lives.

Dealing with voice clones and unusual messages

One of the newer challenges we face is the rise of audio manipulation. Software can now copy a person’s voice using only a short audio clip harvested from a social media post. This means a child might receive a voice note that sounds exactly like a friend, a sibling, or even a parent, asking them for a favour or telling them to click a specific link.

While this sounds frightening, the solution is beautifully simple and relies entirely on offline communication. Talk to your children about how scammers can sometimes use computers to mimic voices. Reassure them that while the voice might sound familiar, the way the person speaks usually gives the game away. A fake message will often sound slightly robotic, lack natural pauses, or use phrasing that their friend would never normally say.

If a child receives a strange request from a known contact, teach them to verify the identity through a completely different method. If they get a weird message on a gaming app, they should call the friend on the telephone or speak to them in school the next day. A quick conversation in the real world will instantly clear up any confusion and keep them safe from phishing attempts masked by familiar voices.

Try this at home or in class

Putting these ideas into practice does not require formal lessons or complicated software. You can build these fact-checking habits into your daily routine using small, practical activities. The first step is to play the details game. Find a safe, AI-generated image online (there are many innocent examples of impossible animals or funny buildings) and show it to the child. Challenge them to find three things that prove a computer made the picture. Praise them for noticing blurry backgrounds, strange lighting, or mismatched shadows. This turns anxiety into a fun challenge.

The second practical step is to create a verification password. Agree on a secret family word or a classroom password. If a child ever receives a frantic message or a strange voice note claiming to be from you or someone they know, they can ask the sender for the secret word. If the person cannot provide it, the child knows instantly that they are dealing with a trick and can safely ignore the message.

The third step is to practise the new tab search together. Next time your child tells you an unbelievable fact they learned online, do not just tell them if it is true or false. Sit down with them, open a fresh internet browser window, and search for the claim together. Let them see the process of typing the question and checking a reliable website, showing them exactly how fact-checking works in the real world.
